SALISBURY, FRANK 0.
81. The Passing of the Unknown Warrior: — His
Majesty the King as Chief Mourner 4,200.00
On November 11th, 1920 — Armistice Day
— after the unveiling of the Cenotaph, the
solemn procession passed on to Westminster
Abbey, where the Unknown Warrior was
buried: chosen by chance from the countless
unnamed dead in France and Flanders, that
the Nation might honour in him, without
distinction of rank, birth, or service, all who
fell in the Great War. His body was brought
with full military honours to London, the
highest officers of the Forces were the pall¬
bearers, the King walked behind as Chief
Mourner, followed by Princes, Peers, and
Statesmen.
“And they buried him among the Kings.”
This picture was painted by official re¬
quest, and a picture of the Abbey Ceremony
is now placed in the Houses of Parliament.
